Montreux

My soundtrack to the Alps these past few days have consisted of lots of Jack Johnson, Explosions in the Sky, and Vivaldi, but it is this one vintage Jason Mraz song that captures the wonder of the mountains.

We had crossed the border into Switzerland, and since Vladimir Nabokov, one of my favourite authors, lived in Montreux for the latter part of his life, I was overcome with an obsessive desire to see the place where he wrote his lastworks. My travel companions, thankfully, were satisfied with promise of beautiful Alpine peaks and a close encounter with Lake Geneva, so off we went.

Montreux was breathtaking, and I know I’m probably boring you by now by using this word to describe everything in my path, but the mountains here were almost spiritual.  We followed the trail along Lake Geneva to the 900-year old Chateau de Chillon. Along the way, I couldn’t help but stop to snap pictures every five seconds, and felt increasingly insignificant in front of nature and all its majesty.

FOUND: a statue of Vladimir Nabokov. Of course, this made my day.
